BIRMINGHAM RAILROAD PARK
Have you ever visited Atlanta’s Centennial Park or Chicago’s Millennium Park? The $22 million Birmingham Railroad Park is poised to be on the same level as other great city parks. The Railroad Park encompasses 21 acres between 14th and 18th streets South and fits between First Avenue South and the railroad tracks that align downtown Birmingham. For a city without a river, the Railroad Park is a river walk along the tracks. The once flat weed infested land is being turned into a lush landscape of hills, a lake, ponds, streams, native vegetation, acres of open lawn, walking, running and bike trails, playgrounds, and a 35,000 capacity amphitheater carved into the hillside at the park’s eastern end. The other end of the park features 10 open acres which could be the new site for music festivals and large scale events similar to City Stages and the Crawfish Boil. The first phase of the Railroad Park is almost complete, and it could be the catalyst for many more good things to come including the push to complete a planned linear park that runs from Interstate 65 to Sloss Furnaces.
